Bourbon Slush

Bourbon Slush Recipe // perfect for a warm southern fall when you want bourbon, but you also want cool & refreshing // www.thehiveblog.com

Hey everyone, it’s Price. I’m back again with another cocktail. So Laurel and I came up with the idea for this post by her posting something on Instagram asking for ideas on a great cocktail for fall in Mississippi. Fall is usually hot, so we needed something refreshing. But I personally think of bourbon when I think about fall, so I was more drawn to the ideas mentioned that had that as one of the main ingredients.

Several people mentioned a bourbon slush. This was something I was unfamiliar with, but after a quick google search, I realized this would be delicious. It involves orange juice, lemonade, sweet tea, and bourbon. And it’s frozen. So this hits on two key things for me: It’s cold and refreshing yet it also contains my favorite fall spirit.

We found a recipe that had great reviews, but it made more than what we had room for in our freezer, so we brought the proportions down to a more manageable size. What we have here makes about eight cups or so. Great for a small party, or perfect for you to enjoy for yourself (or with your wife if she’s not pregnant) every night for a week or so.

You’d need:

1 cup sweet tea

3/4 cup frozen lemonade concentrate

1/2 cup frozen orange juice concentrate

3 cups water

3/4 cup bourbon (We used Old Bardstown from Colony Wine Market)

Start with the tea and mix your frozen concentrates into the tea until they dissolve. Then add the water and bourbon. Stick the pitcher in the freezer for at least 6 or so hours until it is frozen. Because of the bourbon having a lower freezing temperature, the whole mixture won’t freeze solid. So don’t do as my wife did and make a virgin slush, freezing the tea, OJ, lemonade, and water without the bourbon and expect the consistency to work out. That will freeze solid, as she learned first hand.

Once your bourbon mixture is frozen, you’ll be able to scoop it out into individual servings. It’s like an adult snow cone that you can eat with a spoon. You could let it sit out for a little while and let it soften enough to drink through a straw. Either way, it’s very enjoyable. Fallish, yet very cold. Best of both worlds.

Head over to Colony Wine Market and let Scott pick out a good bourbon for you to use for this. (He can always tell by whatever recipe you want to use how “nice” of a bottle you’ll need.) Then walk over to Kroger right across the parking lot and get the other stuff.

I hope you like this as much as I do. I find it to be a real winner.

You have inspired us to serve this concoction at a dinner party tonight involving Laurel’s parents. Wish us luck!
