Daily Harvest Review

A NON-SPONSORED Review of Daily Harvest // www.thehiveblog.com

Hey everybody! How was your weekend? Ours was really good! The peak was probably my nephew’s first birthday party and seeing so many fabulous people! The pit is that all of our indoor Christmas decorations are put back into storage… šŸ™ Our outside ones are still up though – ha! – so we gotta find time to get those down!

Another peak was that I made something of my health kick and went grocery shopping for lots of good, fresh stuff for snacks, lunches, and dinners. Thankfully I’ve already got breakfasts covered!.

Some of y’all might remember seeing me post here and there about Daily Harvest over the past several months. I started it in mid October so I’ve been doing it for about three months now!

What is Daily Harvest, you ask?

It’s what I’ve been eating for breakfast pretty much daily. Daily Harvest is a company (founded by a busy mom who wanted to eat healthy but just didn’t have time to get creative each day) that has put together these little cups filled with plant based super foods that you either throw in the blender with your milk of choice (if it’s a sundae or smoothie) or throw in the microwave (if it’s oatmeal or chia) and within a couple of minutes, you have a great, filling, ultra healthy breakfast!

How does it work?Ā

You go to the Daily Harvest website and browse through all of their many, many options! You can pick how large you want your box (read: how many cups you want per delivery) and how often you want it (weekly or monthly.) It comes delivered to your door packed on dry ice so it’ll stay cool throughout shipment and until you get home to put it up in your freezer! I honestly have not tried anything other than smoothies, sundaes, chia bowls, and oats, so that’s all I can speak about first hand. But that does make up a large portion of what they have to offer!

After trying probably 20 different cups, I have narrowed it down to my favorite five! These five are, in my opinion, the BEST! They don’t really taste like “health food” like a lot of them do. These all taste genuinely good- almost like a dessert splurge! And they all happen to be smoothies, sundaes, or oats. I was not a fan of any of the chia cups I tried…

STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE sundae // This actually has cauliflower in it! This cup is the main reason I mention (a little further down in this post) that you need a good blender for this. It’s not too fun to bite into a piece of unblended cauliflower while you’re trying to enjoy something that tastes like strawberry cheesecake! But I did recently get a new blender and it blends SO much better! The topping for this sundae tastes like cheesecake crust but it’s actually mostly almond!

SALTED CARAMEL sundae // The main ingredient in this is sweet potato, but you’d never guess! It’s super tasty! Sometimes I add a scoop of unflavored protein powder to this if I feel like I need just a little extra. The topping on this one is a fun blend of chia seeds, coconut shavings, and pumpkin seeds!

COLD BREW + ALMOND smoothie // This is fantastic. Sometimes, if I have a banana that is about to go bad, I’ll stick it in with this and it’s really good. (The banana is best if it starts frozen! But you might need to add a tad more milk.)

PUMPKIN + CHAI oats // This has the best fallish flavors that are just so comforting! I absolutely love this one!

COFFEE CRUNCH sundae // This one, too, has a cauliflower base. The toppings on this one are especially good, but honestly, I don’t know what they’re made of… šŸ™‚

Things to know:

+ If you don’t have a good blender, this is not going to be for you. A Wal-Mart brand blender is not going to cut this mustard. I have a Ninja and it works well. A Vitamix would work best! Some of these cups have some weird, super-hard-when-frozen items to cut through!

+ It does take up a good bit of freezer space (especially if you do a monthly box) so be sure you have enough space by the time your box arrives!

+ It’s a tad expensive ($7ish a cup) but I think it is SO worth it. If you bought all the ingredients that go into each cup at the grocery store, you’d definitely spend more. Plus the convenience that comes from it being done for me is worth a lot, too. I do the 24 cups a month, which is the most cost effective.

+ I use unsweetened almond milk for almost all of mine.

+ You can search through each of their offerings based onĀ key benefits (energizing, beautifying, digestive support, etc.), dietary restrictions, and likes and dislikes.

+ I can’t seem to figure out how the overnight oats are supposed to work (because mine are always still frozen in the middle if I put them in the fridge the night before, but I don’t think you’re supposed to leave them out on the counter???) so I always do my oats hot in the microwave! Be sure to follow their directions and stir every minute. Otherwise they will overflow into your microwave and make a mess that busy mornings do not have time for!
