My Take On Bulletproof Coffee

Bulletproof Coffee... Yay or Nay?

Today I wanted to talk about bulletproof coffee!

What is bulletproof coffee, exactly? It’s an interesting mixture of clarified butter, a certain type of coconut oil, and black coffee.

I saw Giuliana Rancic mention it back when she did her FabFitFun daily emails (which I SO miss!) and didn’t think much about it, but then on New Year’s Day this year, my mother in law made some at her nephew’s recommendation (her nephew/Price’s cousin is all about that fit life) and said she felt like it gave her more energy and improved her mental clarity. She also mentioned that it’s supposed to help you slowly lose weight.

SIGN. ME. UP. Especially for the mental clarity thing! Mom brain is real and I need help!!

I did a little googling and found a knockoff way to make bulletproof coffee using your regular coffee, extra virgin coconut oil, and unsalted butter from grass fed cows. I located some of this special butter by KerryGold (which they do not have at Kroger around here! Had to go to Fresh Market to get it) and started drinking knock off bulletproof coffee right when I got up each day for a couple of weeks.

I liked it so I mentioned it to Price. If y’all know him, he’s an all or nothing type of guy so… We ordered the official oil. He was not about the knockoff version! We both felt like the official magical coffee that you’re supposed to use was a bit of a scam, so we have just been using our regular black coffee.

So each morning, I’d add a tablespoon of official oil and a tablespoon of special butter to our regular cup of coffee and I’d mix it real well with a whisk. (You’re supposed to blend it, but since I’m always the first person up, I felt it would be rude to run the blender when the entire rest of the house is asleep.)

I liked the taste ok, and LOVED the effects. I’ve definitely felt energized all day long since I’ve been drinking it! No wishing for a nap every day at like 3:00. Sadly I have not seen any significant weight loss. I did lose a few lbs right at first, but since that has not continued, I don’t give the coffee the credit for that! I have, however, heard of several people who have lost significant amounts of weight with it!

When I REALLY started liking bulletproof coffee was about two weeks ago when (1) I started using ghee (a.k.a. clarified unsalted butter from grass fed cows) instead of KerryGold (the ghee just seems purer to me!) and (2) when I found a way to blend it without making a bunch of noise with the blender. How, you ask? By using this handy little tool! It’s a little battery powered drink mixer that works beautifully! The blending made it taste SOOOO much better because the fat wasn’t just sitting there floating on the top! It was fully blended with the coffee and fully delicious.

Long story short: I love bulletproof coffee! It is fattening, but if you keep the rest of your eating in check, I think that’s ok! Especially since these are “good” fats.

So here are questions I’ve been asked by friends and family since I’ve started on the bulletproof train almost two months ago:

Does it taste good?

Blended, YES! I love it! It’s not sweet, but it’s fatty, and who doesn’t love the way fatty stuff tastes? 😉

Can you add other stuff, like sweetener, to it?

I believe so. Here are a bunch of recipes you can try that incorporate other ingredients on top of the basic three components. I’ve heard people mention adding things like stevia, cocoa powder, cinnamon, vanilla extract… All of those sound delicious to me! I need to try these variations!

Aren’t you supposed to skip breakfast when you drink it?

According to the guy who invented this stuff, yes. You’re supposed to actually drink TWO servings of this concoction in place of breakfast. I personally am not one to ever really get full on liquids. I need substance. So I drink this when I get up, usually between 6 and 6:30, then sit down and eat breakfast with my kids between 8 and 8:30. So I guess my one cup of bulletproof coffee first thing in the morning does sort of serve as my first breakfast?? Then I eat my substantial breakfast (usually whole wheat toast and fruit) with the babies! I have, however, had some friends say that it keeps them full enough by itself to last them til lunch.

What if I don’t like coffee. Can I use something else?

I did read that you can use green tea. I’m not sure that would taste all that great, but as long as you have a simple, all natural, caffeinated liquid as your base, I’m thinking you’re good to go!

Is this actually good for you?

Honestly, I’m not totally sure… I’m no nutritionist! But I think that if you lead a healthy lifestyle and are able to exercise, this addition is fine. Adding a little healthy fat is definitely not a bad thing! Now if you’re overweight, eat fast food all day, ride everywhere in a motorized cart, and start drinking this on top of all of that, I don’t think you’ll have any positive results… Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

With all the extra energy bulletproof coffee gives, I do feel like I’m functioning at a better level and burning more calories throughout the day, so that’s a huge plus!

Does it affect how you sleep at all?

Not one bit! I will say, the one day I had two cups rather than my usual one, I wasn’t just longing to close my eyes when it came time for bed like I normally am, but once I laid down, I was out! And slept great!

Did you have the energy with your knockoff version that you have with your more official version?

Not fully. I really think the ghee and the official oil (called Brain Octane Oil) is the way to go. I cannot tell you how much more energized I feel, particularly in the afternoons!

So here is my recipe:

10 oz. cup of black coffee
1 Tablespoon Ghee
1 Tablespoon Official Oil

Bulletproof Coffee... Yay or Nay?

So have you tried bulletproof coffee? What are your thoughts? Got any other questions for me? I’m planning to continue with it for the foreseeable future! I’d love to hear what y’all think!

Thanks a bunch for stopping in today. I hope you had a fantastic weekend!

Yes I drink it most mornings. I make mine with coffee, 1 tsp of Vanilla Bean Ghee butter, 1 tsp of maca powder, 1/4 cup Toasted Coconut milk, & 1 scoop of marine collagen. I add a little honey to it too sometimes. Blend in my nutri bullet and it’s perfect!

Sounds so yummy, Carmen! Although I’ve never heard of marine collagen?! I need to google this!
