Plant in a Mug DIY

Last week, Price and I had a little family dinner party at our house just for fun and I knew I wanted a little something green and lively to brighten up the tables! I was flipping through instagram and was so inspired by a picture I saw on Thimblepress’s page that I decided to do that very thing myself! Times 8!

It was so easy, and overall was very inexpensive. It also helped me clean out a cabinet! I’ll tell ya how shortly…

All you need in order to do a plant in a gold (or whatever color you want!) mug is…

A can of spray paint in the color of your choice

Old/cheap mugs

Small potted plants (I got mine on clearance at Wal Mart!)

A cardboard box

A small amount of potting soil

I was able to clean out one of our cabinets by picking out about 5 mugs that we NEVER use… They were mugs with corporate logos that we got in goody bags at boring conferences, or mugs from our apartments before we got married, or random other mugs that somehow slipped through the cracks when moving into our house years ago.

Since I still lacked a couple of mugs, I went to Wal Mart and bought a few for about $2 a piece. Doesn’t get much cheaper than that! That’s also where I got some small potted plants on clearance!

So to make these little babies, all you have to do is set your mugs in a cardboard box outside and coat lightly with your spray paint. After that coat dries (which won’t take long!), turn the mugs and dust them with another coat. Repeat this process several times turning them multiple different ways so you hit them with the paint from every angle. And be sure not to spray too much at one time or you’ll end up with drips of paint rolling down the side of your mugs.

Once the mugs are dry and fully coated with your color, transfer a potted plant right into the mug! I did end up needing just a tiny bit of extra potting soil to fill the space that was left after some of the plants were transferred into the larger mugs.

Once all of your transfers are made, take a wet paper towel and wipe down the outsides to knock off any grime that may have gotten on the outside of the mug. Then put them where you want them and enjoy staring!

Here’s how they ended up looking going down one of the tables! So simple, clean, and pretty!

At the end of the night, we sent one home with everybody just for fun. And Price took one of the leftovers to his office to brighten things up there!

These would make great hostess gifts, housewarming gifts, or just little “thinking of you” happies! Hope you have as much fun with this DIY project as I did!
