Time sure flies

when you’re having fun!

And we had a lot of fun

with Dempsey turning one!

I am WAY late in getting these up, as Dempsey turned one over two months ago, but better late than never! I’m so excited to share our little “time flies” party with you! The theme was “time flies” melded with “first class,” so all airplane/sky/flying related!

Our little pilot for the day only kept his cute little hat on for about 60 seconds, but my sweet friend Ashley Upchurch, who is an amazing photographer, captured some good shots with it on! She did all of these photos and I could not love them more!

I think Dempsey was just ready for cake, which is why he kept ripping his hat off (along with his cochlear implant processors! ha!) He was so cute with his smash cake once we blew the candle out! He got so upset with Price and me for continuing to swat his hand away from the flame… In retrospect, I don’t think I put burning candles on my other twos’ smash cakes… But I can’t 100% recall!

The tears quickly went away once the cake went in the mouth, though šŸ™‚

I ended up making the cakes because I waited too late to order anything fancy. I was okay with how they turned out! Just plain white with some white clouds and we were rockin’ and rollin’!

I think my favorite thing about the party was the cloud table. I just put a big white piece of fabric over our breakfast table, then tried to keep the serving pieces and foods to all white (or off white) things.

I put a few thumb tacks in the ceiling and suspended wads of quilt batting with fishing line! It was seriously so easy and very inexpensive! And the effect was pretty cool! (I’m sure I got the idea on Pinterest or something!)

Another fun detail was the wall of paper airplanes. I made this using several shades of blue and white card stock. I experimented with a few styles of paper airplane, and once I determined a favorite, I folded about 60 of them, then poked holes and strung them up on fishing line! I had a dowel rod from Lowe’s to hold everything up at the top. I won’t lie and say this was easy… It was MUCH easier in my head than it was in real life. I ended up using crazy amounts of scotch tape to keep the airplanes in the right spot, because they would slide down the fishing line pretty easily.

After tons of tape, though, I was in love with the effect!

The last little bit of detail was on the entry table and in our bar. The entry table had Dempsey pictures and twinkle lights. The bar had “first class lounge” with drinks and snacks that make me think of flying on airplanes: peanuts, stroopwaffels, Gardetto’s mix, coke, tonic water, sprite… That sort of stuff!

We all had such a fun day celebrating our Bean and are so thankful for such a wonderful first year of life for him! He is a blessing and his little story is SO FUN to watch unfold. Right before our eyes!

Love this reportā£ļøā£ļøā£ļøā£ļøā£ļø One of my observations from the day is how much big brother and big sister adore their baby Bean. This seriously reflects a lot of EXCELLENT parenting!!

Hi! Love the theme and my little ones birthday is next month! Did you make or order your decorations I would love to replicate. If you DIYed anysuggestions?

Hey! So glad you like it! I had so much fun with it! šŸ™‚ I did pretty much everything DIY. The clouds were just quilt batting and I think they added the best effect! The paper airplanes were folded and hung on fishing line by me! I cut out a bunch of letters for “time flies” and “first class lounge.”

My biggest recommendation would be to use regular paper for the airplanes. I used card stock and it was a little too heavy. It would slide down the fishing line a little too easily so I had to secure it with a lot of extra tape.

Let me know if you have any specific questions! I hope this helps!!

Hi! I love your party itā€™s so beautiful! Iā€™m looking at doing a similar theme for my little one, heā€™s my first and turns one in March. Can I ask where you got the invitations? I just LOVE the design.

Thanks girl! I actually made them in photoshop! But if I can do it, anyone with basic photoshop skillz can do it! I bought the clip art from this Etsy seller (https://rstyle.me/+vQFJ8ZYNMbem9-2RdbWhbA) and the rest was super basic using shapes that are already in photoshop! I hope that helps! šŸ™‚ Happy birthday to your little man!!

Hi! Would you be willing to create an Etsy listing for this invitation you made in photoshop? I would love to just use what youā€™ve made. Itā€™s so perfect and I donā€™t have photoshop or know how to use it.

Hey! We are starting to work on decorating for our sonā€™s 1st bday and are kind of copying your party. Haha. Did you follow a tutorial for folding your airplanes? I like the look of yours and havenā€™t been able to find a tutorial thatā€™s similar in style. Thanks so much!

    • Laurel at THE HIVE July 22, 2022 / 2:38 pm

Hey Amanda! What an honor! Haha and I did not watch a tutorial, I just folded them they way I was taught when I was little! I will totally make a tutorial though!! Do you follow me on Instagram? (@laurel_at_thehive) I’ll make one and post it just for you! šŸ™‚
