It’s Dooley Day!

Dooley Miller

Today is what my family likes to call Dooley Day. October 18th, 2002 is the day that my 18-month-younger brother Ryan “Dooley” Miller went home to be with Jesus. 15 years ago! Wow. We usually celebrate Dooley Day over a meal and lots of stories and laughs. We plan to have a belated celebration this weekend in Starkville since we will all be there anyway! 🙂

I try to write about ol’ Dools each year as we remember his homegoing. This post was the first Dooley Day post and I still like it so I’ll re-share! 🙂 This post from last year got me a tiny bit misty as I was re-reading it so I’ll re-share it too! 🙂

I know it may seem weird to some to “celebrate” this date, but honestly, because of Jesus, we CAN celebrate! Dooley is in a perfect place, in a perfect body, with THE MAKER OF THE UNIVERSE! How freaking cool is that? Of course we miss him, but knowing where he is totally trumps the sadness of him no longer being here in the long run.

I’m so thankful for Heaven and my brother’s faith in Jesus and for our close family who gets the opportunity to remember Dooley with JOY that can only come from above.

I hope those of you who knew Dooley get a good laugh today thinking back on a good story! Also, as mentioned in this post, our mama used to make Dooley milkshakes with all the highest calorie stuff she could think of in it to fill out his long, lanky frame! And he still never gained a pound… #totesjelly… I digress…. SO! If you’re looking for a good excuse to go get a milkshake or some ice cream today, do it in memory of Dooley! 🙂

Thank y’all SO much for reading this little blog! It means oh so much to me! 🙂 Have a wonderful day and, in whatever you’re doing today, go be brave! “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

And thanks Suzie for all the great pictures of Dooley & Jordan that you shot. They are favorites!! We still have the beautiful dawg photos too. Gilligan and Mackenzie are no longer with us. You also shot the best pic of Tish Tosh the cat. Beautiful memories from by-gone days……

Oops – I think I may have put those last two comments in each other’s spots. I’m confident you’ll know which is which.

I am blessed to have so many wonderful and funny memories of Dooley! I am truly thankful God put Dooley in the Watsons’ lives! I think of him often and for many years I would always wait for the front door to open and Dooley walk in. He was such a joy! Such a great way to remember him! Love all the Millers!

I always think of Dooley’s critters!! He told me he had a pet raccoon that came in the yard- I asked him if he knew they could carry rabies?. He just said “mine’s not sick”. But my best memory was in fourth grade SS when at the end of a presentation about King Solomon (Dr Perry was teacher and had an emergency so he wife subbed)-“King Soloman” asked if anyone had questions. He calmly said “yes. Why are you pretending to be a man?”??

I was blessed to know Dooley and you Millers while in Kyrgyzstan. I remember his sweet, big, amazing smile and loving, kind spirit. Thinking of you Millers with gratitude in mt heart, especially today, and holding you up in prayer before the Father. What a comfort to know we will one day be reunited, this time forever, in our maker. Thank you for sharing this, Laurel, thank you Mary and all the Millers for sharing God’s love with me, and thank you Father, for sweet Dooley…
