Today is what my family likes to call Dooley Day. October 18th, 2002 is the day that my 18-month-younger brother Ryan “Dooley” Miller went home to be with Jesus. 15 years ago! Wow. We usually celebrate Dooley Day over a meal and lots of stories and laughs. We plan to have a belated celebration this weekend in Starkville since we will all be there anyway! 🙂
I try to write about ol’ Dools each year as we remember his homegoing. This post was the first Dooley Day post and I still like it so I’ll re-share! 🙂 This post from last year got me a tiny bit misty as I was re-reading it so I’ll re-share it too! 🙂
I know it may seem weird to some to “celebrate” this date, but honestly, because of Jesus, we CAN celebrate! Dooley is in a perfect place, in a perfect body, with THE MAKER OF THE UNIVERSE! How freaking cool is that? Of course we miss him, but knowing where he is totally trumps the sadness of him no longer being here in the long run.
I’m so thankful for Heaven and my brother’s faith in Jesus and for our close family who gets the opportunity to remember Dooley with JOY that can only come from above.
I hope those of you who knew Dooley get a good laugh today thinking back on a good story! Also, as mentioned in this post, our mama used to make Dooley milkshakes with all the highest calorie stuff she could think of in it to fill out his long, lanky frame! And he still never gained a pound… #totesjelly… I digress…. SO! If you’re looking for a good excuse to go get a milkshake or some ice cream today, do it in memory of Dooley! 🙂
Thank y’all SO much for reading this little blog! It means oh so much to me! 🙂 Have a wonderful day and, in whatever you’re doing today, go be brave! “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
