The Diaper Bag

Ah, the diaper bag…

It seems like I’m carrying this thing around more than my actual purse these days!

And actually, I was prepared for that. Some friends of mine who had kids before me told me to be sure and get a diaper bag that I really liked because it would become my new purse, and boy were they not kidding!!

Thankfully, my sister-in-law Katie pointed me in the direction of Gigi New York’s really big bags! This line was actually dreamed up by a couple of moms who wanted stylish handbags but wanted them to be easily cleanable and very durable. And isn’t that exactly what you want in a diaper bag? So thanks to Katie and her beautiful store Arco Avenue and my sweet and generous parents who gave this to me as a shower gift, I am now the proud owner of a Gigi bag that serves as my diaper bag (and will soon serve as just a great, big handbag once diaper bags are no longer needed!)

I’m not the biggest monogram fan, but I love how Gigi does the monograms on their bags. Simple and beautiful. And you have the option for the monogram to be directly on the bag, or on a removable tag!

So what’s in my diaper bag? I’ve actually had several mama-to-be friends ask me what all I keep in there, so allow me to share! Hopefully some soon-to-be mommies will find this semi helpful! (Or maybe not. Whatever!)

What's in my diaper bag? // www.thehiveblog.comWhat's in my diaper bag? // www.thehiveblog.comThe diaper bag is your emergency kit. With a tiny one, anything can happen. Stuff can come out of either end. Or both ends at the same time if you’re lucky like that. And I’m not excluding cries from things that come out of the top end! So it’s a mother’s job to always be prepared! Yay for the stylish diaper bag. Fashiony on the outside, armed with day-saving greatness on the inside.

1. A portable changing pad. I ordered mine from this etsy shop and love it! The side that folds out is waterproof so it’s easy to wipe down after a blowout.

2. Items for inside the portable changing pad. Diapers, of course… And a portable package (or two or three) of wipes. And diaper rash cream. And a few small trash bags in case you’re somewhere where you can’t exactly throw a stink bomb in the garbage can and let it sit. Thank you to our friends John and Anna who loaned us our first small trash bag at a Super Bowl party! We went and bought ourselves a box the next day and haven’t been caught without one since! #liveandlearn

3. Gas drops. These things actually work and are particularly helpful when your baby is in the first month or two of life. (That’s how it was for us anyway!)

4. Extra clothes and socks. Extra clothes are needed for the blowout scenarios. And those trash bags mentioned above are also good to throw those crapped on clothes into! Oh, and baby socks have a way of disappearing, so it’s always good to have an extra pair in the DB.

5. WubbaNub or other pacifier. We have five WubbaNubs. FIVE. When you need one, you can’t risk not having one close by…

6. A Minimergency kit. We got this from Row10! Right now, this is pretty much just looking cute floating around in the bag, but it’ll one day be extremely helpful, as it has bandaids, stain remover, crayons, sewing kit… Lots of Mary Poppins-esque goodies!

7. Chew toy. We love the Sophie the Giraffe one!

8. Bibs and burp cloths. Especially handy when the child reaches the drooly teething phase where slobber drenches everything in a 24 inch radius.

9. Hand sanitizer. Always a good idea to have some of this on hand!

10. A good attitude. Ok, so this technically doesn’t go in the DB, but with a wild little one with you all the time, it helps to have a go-with-the-flow attitude about things! Because as I’m learning, kids have a way of throwing plans off just a wee bit from time to time! If you plan for everything to run perfectly smoothly all the time, you’ve set yourself up for disappointment! (Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!) Little cheerins are SUCH a blessing, so making up your mind to try and enjoy every minute, even if things don’t seem to be going your way, makes things so much better!

I promise!!! 🙂

To all the other mamas out there– what are your diaper bag essentials? I’d love to hear what y’all find to be helpful so I can share with my pregnant friends! 🙂

Good stuff!! I keep some cash in mine at all times, in case I get stuck somewhere with only my diaper bag and no purse. Ya live and ya learn 😉 Also, I keep a thermometer and baby Tylenol in mine now too. Ya never know!

Love the cash idea… I’m surprised I haven’t been caught in a situation where I needed $$ and only had my diaper bag with me! But now I’ll be prepared for when that happens (because I’m sure it will sooner or later!) 😉

I love your diaper bag! I would totally carry it as a purse. And the fact that it has the monogram tag makes it even more amazing.
