More Travel Journaling

travel sketch journaling - how to get started!

Hello! I hope you’re having a good day so far! šŸ™‚

So on our recent ski trip, I finished out another travel journal (I’ve written about travel journaling here) and I am here to tell you HOW MUCH FUN it is to do these little drawings! Going back and looking at past drawings (not only from past trips, but just from pool days or slow mornings or nighttime drawing to avoid laundry and dishes… ha) is so much fun and brings back memories in such a cool way.

My friend Beth Dean who taught me the art of travel journaling shares a scientific fact that, when you put pen to paper in a certain moment, you’re much more likely to remember that moment/day/trip than if you didn’t document it in a hand/eye way. (Meaning taking pictures on your phone is NOT THE SAME THING!)

Upon completing this current journal and going back through it, I was flooded with so many memories of moments/weekends/trips! It’s so cool how it happens like that!

PLEASE… If you have ever even thought for a half a second about travel sketch journaling (and note that half of these drawings are at our house so you do not have to travel to do this!), DO IT!! You’ll be so glad you did. And you do not have to be an artist. Just put pen to paper and make a quick note about the moment you want to remember. And guess what? YOU are the artist so if you want to change something up about the subject you’re painting, you get to! You’re in control! I’ve been known to add a pretty sunset, or make a Winter Park sign a lot more simplified than it is in real life because I just couldn’t figure out how to draw it how it actually was! haha so you can change things up when you’re the pen and brush holder!

Here’s what you need to get started! I’ll link the slightly harder to find items below!

  • a notebook of watercolor paper (not sketch paper!)
  • waterproof pens
  • pencil
  • eraser
  • small set of watercolors
  • paintbrush with its own reservoir
  • willingness to be bad at this for a little while!

. . . . .

Don’t forget to put your contact info in the beginning of the book so it can be returned to ya if it ever gets lost!
